Background: http://worldtrigger.wikia.com/wiki/Y%C5%ABma_Kuga
Personality: Yuuma is a fifteen year old child soldier who grew up world-hopping with his father in an alternate universe referred to as the Neighborhood. Cool, laid-back, and generally friendly in temperament, Yuuma may occasionally give the impression of naivete, having not grown up on Earth -- he's initially fuzzy on things like 'soccer' and 'obeying traffic signals'. In truth, however, Yuuma's sense of morality has been shaped over years of participation in bloody armed conflict. For example, Yuuma considers violence the preferred way to deal with even everyday threats, such as school bullies or street thugs. He blithely breaks a young man's leg for trying to scam him out of his money, and when a classmate tries to protect him from some larger boys, he's ready to simply watch said bullies beat the tar out of his classmate because it's 'not his problem'. In Yuuma's eyes, individual strength is everything and each is ultimately responsible for his own safety.
On the other hand, Yuuma does understand that different worlds (particularly Earth) have their own customs and laws, and is willing to abide by them in order to fit in. After he's informed that his reactions are complete overkill, for instance, he makes a concerted effort to rein in his behavior, at one point proudly announcing that he's merely beaten a group of delinquents, without breaking any bones. He Tried(TM).
Yuuma seems to greatly enjoy new experiences, especially Japanese snacks. And while some in his canon distrust him automatically for being an outsider, his easygoing, playful nature has allowed him to befriend many who initially regarded him with suspicion. Though sometimes callous in his battlefield reasoning, Yuuma is considerably less blase when it comes to the safety of those he's grown close to. Like most in his canon, he's willing to put his own safety on the line for his friends. Moreover, despite being the 'ace' of his fighting squad, Yuuma turns out to be a consummate team player, more than willing to sacrifice personal glory for the benefit of the squad as a whole.
Yuuma's willingness to sacrifice for those close to him may have roots in his relationship with his father, Yuugo, who died several years ago in a desperate attempt to stop Yuuma from bleeding out on an alien battlefield. Originally, Yuuma had been instructed to stay within a nearby friendly base for his own safety; when he disobeyed orders, he ended up on the wrong end of a deadly enemy weapon. After discovering his father's sacrifice, Yuuma ended up spending a few years fighting as a mercenary before finally fulfilling his father's final wish that Yuuma visit Earth. Once on Earth, Yuuma had little left to live for, but ended up meeting a boy his own age whose own selfless personality reminded him of his dead father. Since then, Yuuma and the boy, Mikumo, have become close friends and Mikumo remains the major reason Yuuma stays on Earth.
Yuuma's other significant relationships include those with Replica, an AI soldier who schooled Yuuma in military strategy, and (less so) his and Mikumo's squadmate, Chika Amatori, who lost her brother to an incident with denizens of the Neighborhood some years ago. However, Yuuma has also found great friends in his fellow agents, particularly Midorikawa and Konami, who share both his playful nature and talent for combat.
Though Yuuma generally displays rational judgment, there are times in which his emotions (loyalty or curiosity, in particular) sometimes get the better of him. When his fellow agents tell him not to participate in a pre-competition duel with a young man named Kou, for example, Yuuma feels the need to do so anyway in order to find out what makes Kou such a feared combatant. When it turns out that Kou is an extremely fast learner who can be most reliably beaten only by those he's never fought before, Yuuma ends up unintentionally placing his entire squad at a disadvantage, since he's essentially fed Kou free information about his battle style.
In general, Yuuma is a bit adrift -- in canon, he's saddled with a condition that will result in his slow but inevitable death, so the only things keeping him in one place are his friendships with the Earthlings. Over time, however, he seems to have developed stronger and stronger attachments, which can only be a net positive for him.
Abilities: Yuuma is an accomplished child soldier with a great deal of battle experience. In particular, he is quick-thinking and quick on his feet, with an improvisational style of engagement and a solid understanding of enemy psychology. He is not generally an emotional fighter, valuing efficiency over most else. Physically, Yuuma's reaction time, strength, speed, and spatial awareness are well-honed; he is an agile soldier who prefers melee fighting. Additionally, he's developed a psychic power: the ability to detect lies from truth in conversation with someone.
Yuuma has a high level of Trion life energy, which can be harnessed through technological artifacts to greatly enhance physical ability and even generate battlefield weapons and tools, like energy blades and shields. In canon, his Black Trigger, a small ring and keepsake from his father, is constantly active; it replaces his human body with a nearly identical body made entirely of energy, which is strong enough to survive most physical attacks with barely any damage. This body regenerates over time, and prevents Yuuma from needing to sleep. As an example, Yuuma is hit by a car in one episode, but the only effect to his body is a small crack in his body's face that quickly heals.
In battle, the Black Trigger allows him to copy and use enemy Trion abilities. The abilities showcased so far are listed here, and include the ability to form energy shields, jump great distances, weight targets down with materialized chains, shoot energy bolts, and detect enemies.
In addition, Yuuma has a Border-issued Trigger, with abilities listed under Normal. This trigger includes the Scorpion energy sword, a shield, the ability to disappear from Trion tracking systems, and the ability to summon an energy platform that can be used for midair jumps.
Alignment: Peromei. The loss of his father was one of the defining moments of Yuuma's life, and one that still leaves him to this day questioning what he should do with what's left of his life after (in his opinion) his father gave his life to save someone who was careless, possibly undeserving. Further, Yuuma's Side Effect, the ability to detect when people are lying, has a tendency to show Yuuma some of the worse sides of human behavior. Turning that around and finding hope in living is still a work in progress.
